Young girls trying to pass as boys in Afghanistan is nothing new, but NPR reports the practice seems to be on the rise as the Taliban increasingly cracks down on the rights of women and girls. The term is known as “bacha posh” in Afghanistan, which literally translates to “dressing like a boy.” NPR cites an undated video released on social by the Taliban last month showing them interrogating the girl, who the news outlet describes as “terrified.” The article notes that, as girls age and can no longer pass as boys, the experience is “traumatic.”
