Twenty attorneys general have formed a coalition defending mifepristone’s safety after the FDA said it would review the abortion medication. The officials released a statement noting that the drug has been used safely and effectively in the United States and globally for 25 years. “The decision to reexamine access was made in response to a scientifically baseless letter and ignores decades of research,” the statement said. “Medical decisions should be left between patients, their families and their providers — and should be guided by science, not political agendas.” Two months ago, several Republican attorneys general sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. contending that recent studies raised concerns about the drug.
