Australia has named Lt. General Susan Coyle to lead its army, the first woman to ever hold the position. Coyle joined the Army Reserves in 1987 and has held several strategic levels and command roles the past 39 years, including Head Information Warfare, Commander Task Group Afghanistan and Commanding Officer 17th Signal Regiment. Reuters notes that her appointment is part of Australia’s effort to increase the number of female officers after “allegations of systematic sexual harassment and discrimination.” Coyle assumes the post in July and replaces Lt. General Simon Stuart, who is retiring.
