The mayor of a small California city has resigned after admitting to being an agent for the Chinese government. Eileen Wang, 58, was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022 and became mayor this past February. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California has charged her with one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government, which could lead to a 10-year prison stint. According to her plea agreement, Wang and an accomplice “worked at the direction and control of People’s Republic of China government officials,” including promoting propaganda. Her accomplice, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, is serving a four-year prison sentence after pleading guilty last October.
