What you probably already know: If you thought your phone was listening to you before, get ready for the newest version of ChatGPT. OpenAI announced Monday that its large language model can now “see, hear, and speak.”
Why? The company is looking to taken on competitors like Google, Apple and Microsoft, who are working to integrate the technology into existing virtual assistants. What’s interesting about OpenAI’s version is that you can interrupt it, chat about images you share with it, ask it to suggest recipes based on what it sees in your fridge, etc. Basically, it’s highly interactive.
What it means: This has enormous implications for a variety of industries and fields, but one space in particular is assistance for people with disabilities, as well as real-time translation services that can imitate the user’s voice. Podcasters could, for example, use the service to translate into other languages but use the podcaster’s voice.
What happens next? If “imitate your voice” has you wondering about the security issues this brings up, you’re definitely not alone. President Joe Biden called for a ban on AI-generated voice imitation earlier this year after the technology was used to scam primary voters in New Hampshire.
