In response to reports and widespread complaints, the Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into AI-powered chatbots. The FTC is issuing orders to seven companies — including Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram) and Alphabet (parent company of Google) — to provide information on how they test and monitor potentially negative impacts on children. A recent report from Common Sense Media found that 72% of teens say they’ve used AI companions at least once, and various news reports have detailed allegations of teen suicide after they interacted with chatbots. “As AI technologies evolve, it’s important to consider the effects chatbots can have on children,” FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said.
