Filmmaker Chloé Zhao is just the second female director to earn two Oscar nominations for Best Director. Zhao is up for the award this year for her adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, Hamnet — a speculative account of Shakespeare’s only son, whose tragically short life potentially inspired Hamlet. Zhao won Best Director in 2021 for Nomadland. Jane Campion was previously the only other female director with two nominations.
