Two Kentucky women have filed a lawsuit seeking an end to the state’s “tampon tax” on period products, calling it “arbitrary and irrational.” The Kentucky Lantern says the state is among 18 that still levies a tax on tampons, pads and other products. The suit, filed by Alexandria Baldon and Skylar Davis, says the tax is discriminatory and unconstitutional. Laura Strausfeld, founder and executive director of Period Law, a legal advocacy organization, told the news outlet that no similar products designed for men are subject to tax. Period Law says its work has helped end “unfair, regressive and unconstitutional” taxes on medically necessary products in 23 states, saving customers an annual average of more than $141 million.
