Los Angeles, New York City school districts restrict AI for students

The two largest school districts in the United States have placed new restrictions on AI in schools amid concerns about the effect of the technology on learning. Los Angeles Unified School District clarified that students won’t have access to generative artificial intelligence with school-issued devices starting with the 2026-2027 school year. Meanwhile, New York City Public Schools announced a moratorium on generative AI for students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, banning software that uses student-facing AI and companion chatbots. For high school students, schools will offer AI literacy classes designed to help them think critically about the technology, along with limited AI pilots for a small number of high school classrooms.
