The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has issued a statement opposing gender-related transition procedures until the patient is 19. The group said it was issuing a position statement rather than a clinical practice guideline because of the lack of quality research on the subject, noting treatment complications and potential harms. It adds that other countries, including Finland, Sweden and the Unition Kingdom, have recently revised their own policies in a similar fashion. The move was praised by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services but critics blasted the move, with many noting that other medical associations have long-supported gender-affirming care based on current evidence.
