Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has become the first woman to lead the celebration of Mexican Independence. The holiday, “El Grito de la Independencia,” is observed Sept. 15 and dates to 1810, when the “Cry of Independence” (El Grito in Spanish) was heard to celebrate Mexico’s separation from Spain. Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first-ever woman president and the former mayor of Mexico City, was elected last year in a landslide with more than 58% of the vote. She has a PhD in energy engineering and was part of a panel of climate scientists who were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work.
