In the United States, two in five adults and nearly one in four students struggle to afford period products. A new online education program aims to bring together health care providers, researchers and community leaders working to understand and adress the deeper roots of period poverty. Dignity Grows University, launched in January, has held three live, virtual courses on the role culture plays in menstruation, education and equality, with two more planned for the winter. The interactive sessions feature multiple speakers along with small-group discussions, with the goal of ensuring “that every participant walks away with a comprehensive, nuanced understanding of period poverty.”
