More women in the United States are drinking while pregnant, including binge and heavy drinking. A study published in JAMA analyzed national survey data from 2011 through 2024 and finds that alcohol use was most prevalent among older women, college graduates, those without a partner and those who are employed. “Newer findings raise concern that certain high-risk patterns may be increasing,” the study notes, adding that tobacco use was strongly associated with binge or heavy drinking. The findings don’t explain why alcohol use increased, but researchers say they highlight the need for continued education, screening and prevention efforts.
