The rise of “smart glasses” that have hidden cameras built into them has, somewhat unsurprisingly, led to a new trend where men record their interactions with women that are then posted on social media without the women’s consent. The BBC spoke to women whose somewhat innocuous conversations ended up posted online. One woman had given the man her phone number after he asked her out, and he then posted the video with her number visible. She then received a barrage of messages. Another woman was approached by a man in smart sunglasses while in her bikini at the beach and they had a conversation where she shared a bit about her employer and family. He posted it online without her consent and the video received 6.9 million views on TikTok. The videos are posted as “advice” videos for men on how to hit on and hook up with women, and many of the men have become influencers, even earning money based on the popularity of their videos.
