Social media platforms are systematically censoring medically accurate information on women’s health, according to a warning by more than 600 leaders across the globe. A U.K. Parliament briefing, citing media sources, notes that Facebook owner Meta has removed dozens of accounts belonging to abortion access providers, LGBTQ+ groups and reproductive health organizations, noting that, in general, social media algorithms on Amazon, Google, TikTok and Meta consistently fail to distinguish between educational content and explicit material. “Social media platforms must stop treating women’s health content as sexual or inappropriate,” the letter says. “Moderation systems must be updated to reflect medical context, fairness and gender equity.”
