In East Texas, about an hour outside Dallas, is The Bird’s Nest, a gender-specific tiny-home village inhabited by 11 women between about 60 to 80 years old. Most are divorced and retired, and all agreed to a “no drama” rule as a prerequisite for living in the community, which formed three years ago. Realtor.com notes that the village has created a sense of place and an “affordable, safe and empowering space” for the women who live there. Founder Robyn Yerian told writer Julie Taylor that she first bought the land and created the community because she needed an affordable place to retire. She called the process to secure spots in The Bird’s Nest “rigorous,” adding that about 500 women are vying to fill one open space. "I didn’t start out wanting to empower women — it evolved," Yerian said. "I didn’t quite realize how many women are struggling in retirement. So now, I am always thinking of ways I can encourage women."
