AI technology is increasingly supporting radiologists in the evaluation of mammograms. The FDA has approved many AI-assistance programs, each with varying rates of accuracy. One was found to have a 93% rate of correctly identifying breast cancers compared to 89% among human specialists. At the University of California, San Francisco, researchers have demonstrated how AI can shorten the time between when a suspicious mammogram is flagged and when a biopsy is performed. Experts say concerns with the technology include causing patients unnecessary stress by being too sensitive to abnormalities that aren’t cancerous and leading doctors to become too dependent on it.
