Technology evangelists have predicted that artificial intelligence will make work so efficient that humans may not have to work at all in the future. That, however, is not what is happening now. A new study, the largest of its kind thus far, found that after analyzing 164,000 workers’ digital activity that their work actually intensified and they spent more time using business-management tools like accounting software or CRMs. These same workers spent less time than they previously had on focused, uninterrupted work. It seems AI is opening up more time for people in their workday, and as a result, they’re working harder than ever on less meaningful tasks.
