Eight University of Alabama students have filed a lawsuit in response to officials suspending two student-run publications because administrators claimed they violated anti-DEI initiatives. The students either served or planned to serve as editors or contributors to magazines Alice (a fashion and lifestyle publication) and Nineteen Fifty-Six (which focuses on Black culture). The suit says officials defunded the magazines “because UA administrators disfavor their editorial perspectives related to race and gender,” adding that the suspension constitutes unlawful censorship and is unconstitutional. The suit calls for university officials to reinstate the publications, as well as cover plaintiffs’ court and attorneys’ fees.
