Women who vape during pregnancy may be harming their unborn child. Researchers from the University of California, Riverside found that vanillin, a common e-cigarette flavoring, may disrupt early embryo development and vaping could be linked to women having difficulty conceiving and to miscarriages. “There is little understanding of how vaping can affect developing embryos in pregnant women who use electronic cigarettes,” said Prue Talbot, a UCR professor who led the study. “Women do not necessarily know the chemicals in vape products.” Researchers urge regulators to consider mandatory ingredient disclosures on e-cigarette packages, while physicians should advise women not to vape during pregnancy.
