Eighty-two-year-old tennis legend Billie Jean King is now a college graduate. King received her bachelor’s degree in history from Cal State Los Angeles earlier this week, with ESPN reporting that she first took college classes there 65 years ago. King recalled that she wasn’t a scholarship athlete back in 1961 because women weren’t given scholarships then. King won 39 major championships during her career and beat Bobby Riggs in the landmark 1973 “Battle of the Sexes,” which was memorialized in the 2017 movie of the same name starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell. King has been a longtime activist for gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights.
