South Africa has launched a new campaign to promote respect, dignity and equality amidst a growing wave of online misogyny. Called Build or Break, the campaign “seeks to confront the culture of online abuse by addressing the harmful attitudes and behaviors” fueling it. It seeks to encourage boys and young men to promote integrity, respect and positive influence. It launched less than two months ago and has already reached more than 600,000 social media users. The initiative is supported by UNESCO’s Social Media 4 Piece project funded by the European Union. Social Media 4 Peace efforts are also being implemented in South Africa, Indonesia, Kenya, Iraq and Kyrgyzstan.
