Social media is now the top source of news, overtaking websites and apps. The 15th annual Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford says 54% of consumers across all age groups say social media and video networks are their most preferred way of accessing online news, slightly ahead of news organizations’ own websites and apps. Ten percent — mostly younger consumers — use AI chatbots for news. “The relative decline of television as a source of news is well recognized across the industry,” the report notes. “What is perhaps less acknowledged is that people’s use of news websites and apps has declined at a similar rate in recent years.”
