FDA calls for more data on testosterone therapy for women

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging manufacturers to do more research on testosterone treatments for women. In the U.S., testosterone has long been used off-label to treat low sexual desire, often using low doses of products approved for men. The FDA has reviewed testosterone therapy for women several times, but it’s never been approved due to concerns about cardiovascular and breast cancer risks. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK have approved or licensed women-specific testosterone products. Women in the U.S. also deserve testosterone products "formulated and dosed specifically for them,” said Dorothy Fink, deputy director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
