President Trump’s plan to impose a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa petitions will have a pronounced effect on K-12 schools. The National Education Association notes that more than 500 school districts in the United States employ more than 2,300 H-1B visa holders, with Texas, North Carolina and California employing the most. Georgia, Alaska, Arizona and Minnesota all also employ more than 100 educators. The report says many rural, small school districts employ visa holders and says the fee “would severely impact these districts’ ability to serve their students.” Approximately 77% of K-12 teachers in the U.S. are women.
