Hormone therapy may be a safe option for treating menopausal symptoms in women in their 50s. Research from JAMA Internal Medicine notes that hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, but “there has been debate for years about its cardiovascular safety.” The study, though, determined that hormone therapy — treatment with estrogen or estrogen plus a progestin — did not elevate the risk of coronary heart disease among younger postmenopausal women and “might remain a safe first line treatment.”
