Medical school enrollment has dropped in states with restrictive abortion laws since the Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that the U.S. Constitution doesn’t guarantee abortion rights. The JAMA Network examined more than 4,300 programs and says “the Dobbs decision was associated with a significant decrease in residency applications” among both men and women. JAMA also notes that the decision may affect the health care workforce in restricted states, with more than half of the 18 states that banned abortion after the ruling reporting a decline in female employment growth compared to the national average.
