Melinda French Gates has dedicated another $215 million for global women’s health. In an announcement on her Pivotal website under the tagline “Special Initiative,” Pivotal notes that women’s health has historically been both underfunded and underresearched. “The right care at the right time can change everything for a woman,” Gates says. The site notes that women spend an average of nine years in poor health and every two minutes a woman in the world dies a preventable death because she’s pregnant or has given birth. Last September, Pivotal announced that it was committing $100 million to women’s health research and development initiatives in partnership with global health company Wellcome Leap.
