Nearly two-thirds of women journalists report harassment

Nearly 63% of female investigative journalists say they’ve “experienced unwelcome sexual advances or harassment from a source,” compared to only 15% of men. The survey, by Investigative Reporters & Editors, also notes that 43% faced harassment from a colleague or editor, compared to only 6% of men. Women also described having their objectivity questioned more often and struggling with work-life balance. One woman, Erin Orr, recounted a source who used inappropriate language, commented on her appearance and even gave her a big hug during an interview. “I was shocked at first,” she said. “I just worked my way out of the embrace.” Several respondents said bosses “play an important role in addressing such unwanted behavior.”
