Diane Carlson Evans, the former Army combat nurse who spearheaded a decade-long campaign to build the Vietnam Women’s Memorial on the National Mall, has died of cancer at age 79. In 1984, haunted by the memories of treating casualties at evacuation hospitals, Carlson Evans noticed the names of only few women at the newly dedicated Vietnam War Memorial and asked, “Where are the women?”, according to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial was officially dedicated on Nov. 11, 1993, and pays tribute to the more than 265,000 women who served during the war.
