The name of a significant women’s health condition has been renamed following a global effort led by medical experts. The condition long known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is now Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, a condition that impact more than 170 million women worldwide. “For too long, the name reduced a complex, long-term hormonal or endocrine disorder to a misunderstanding about ‘cysts’ and a focus on ovaries,” The Endocrine Society says, noting that many patients with the condition had no ovary cysts. “This contributed to missed diagnoses and inadequate treatment.” Professor Helena Teed, an endocrinologist at Monash Health who led the effort, called the name change “a landmark moment that will lead to desperately needed worldwide advancements.”
