The state of Pennsylvania has sued Character Technologies, alleging that the company’s chatbot falsely claimed to hold a state medical license. The complaint says the California-based company’s Character.AI chatbot has more than 20 million active users and seeks an injunction to stop AI companion bots from posing as licensed medical professionals. The state alleges violations of the Medical Practice Act and highlights new measures by Gov. Josh Shapiro to curb “predatory” AI practices. “Department of State Secretary Al Schmidt says the state will “continue to take action to protect the public from misleading or unlawful practices.”
