A major nationwide study published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health finds that women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS) face a fourfold higher risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease than those without the condition. The increase in risk persisted even after accounting for health issues including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and elevated cholesterol. Researchers say the findings “emphasize the need for health care provider education and PMOS patient awareness” to improve prevention and early-stage interventions, including routine blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid screenings.
