Registered nurses in California earn a mean annual wage of $150,000 per year, by far the highest in the nation. All told, nurses in 12 states earn more than $100,000 annually, according to new data released by the Bureau of Labor statistics. Nurses make more than $120,000 per year in Hawaii (No. 2, at about $124,000), Oregon (No. 3). At about $77,000 annually, registered nurses are paid the least in South Dakota. The fastest-growing job in nursing is nurse practitioner, with more than 5 million additional jobs projected by 2034. It’s estimated that women hold 88% of all nursing positions.
