The recent assault of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum (she was publicly groped) has shined a light on what UK publication The Guardian calls a “relentless cycle of abuse” directed toward female politicians. Back in 2016, the Inter-Parliamentary Union published a white paper on resistance toward women leaders, saying it can take different forms including “sexist remarks, intimidation or harassment.” Study findings confirmed that sexism, harassment and violence again women politicians were “very real and widespread” across the world. One European politician said, “I receive emails, sometimes accompanied by pornographic images, and the message ‘get out of politics; get married instead.’” The Guardian notes that one in five of the women in the survey say they’ve been physically assaulted.
