Young adults who take a break from social media report significant mental health benefits. A JAMA Network Open study notes that a one-week social media detox led to a 16% drop in anxiety, a 25% drop in depression and better sleep patterns. JAMA says the association between social media use and mental health remains poorly understood. “Young adults (aged 18-24 years) have been consistently identified as among the most frequent users of social media, and as a group at heightened risk for the onset of depression, anxiety, and related mental health concerns,” the study says. “This developmental stage, often described as emerging adulthood, is marked by heightened vulnerability and transition.” Jama says more research is needed, especially among diverse populations.
