The United States ranks only No. 42 in the World Economic Forum’s ranking of 148 countries based on gender equality. Women in the U.S. make up more than 50% of the population, but only about 28% of legislators and only a third of S&P 500 board seats. But women in some states fare much better than in others. WalletHub analyzed workplace environment, political empowerment and health and education and found that Hawaii is the top state for women, followed by Nevada, Maryland, Maine and Oregon. In Hawaii, “men and women enjoy very similar conditions in the workplace, in schools and in politics,” the report says, adding that eighth-grade math test scores are virtually the same among girls and boys. The state also has the same number of women and men in its congressional delegation. Utah ranked last.
