What you probably already know: For generations, women in science have faced familiar and frustrating challenges. Even when women made groundbreaking discoveries, they were less likely to receive recognition than their male colleagues in what’s known as the “Matilda effect.” That may be changing. German researchers analyzed more than 220 million scientific papers published between 1900 and 2025 (quite an undertaking!) and found that women are participating in research at record levels and are also increasingly being recognized for it. The findings, published last week, offer what researchers call “the first quantitative insight into the Matilda effect from the early phases of modern science to the present.”
Why it matters: The study, using one of the world’s largest scholarly databases called Open Alex, examined publication records from approximately 60 million researchers. It focused on the number of women publishing scientific research and the prevalence of the Matilda effect. The evolution was striking. In the early 1900s, women represented roughly one in 10 scientific scholars. Today, they account for more than 40% of researchers publishing scholarly work worldwide. Notably, women are also much more likely to be listed as the corresponding, or lead, author, something researchers say, “serves as a proxy for intellectual leadership and prestige.”
What it means: In many academic disciplines that leadership gap has effectively disappeared, particularly in the past two decades, though regional differences remain. Latin America is approaching gender parity, though several Asian countries lag behind and “remain the only region where male authors continue to dominate.” The findings matter well beyond college campuses, with the authors noting that scientific research shapes everything from the medicines people take to the AI systems they use to climate policy and public health. Health sciences have the highest share of female authors and are approaching near parity. Social and life sciences are close behind. Gender gaps are most persistent in engineering and the physical sciences.
What happens next: As more women direct laboratories and secure funding, their growing leadership will reshape research in what study authors call “a complex and shifting landscape.” Women, however, still don’t enjoy equal access to the highest levels of academia, though there’s no reason to think progress won’t continue. “The overall trajectory of female participation shows a continuous increase, (and) the long-term positive trend remains unambiguous. It seems that gender influences on lead roles are almost balanced nowadays. This is valid for all disciplines and almost all world regions.”
