In the first three years after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, the Pregnancy Prosecutions Tracking Study found that 902 pregnancy-related crime cases were initiated by prosecutors. Of those cases, the majority were based in three states: Alabama (204 cases), Oklahoma (222), and South Carolina (381). All other states initiated less than 30 new cases. The majority of cases — 72% — involved low-income people and cases involving Black, Indigenous and people of color represented a disproportionate percentage of cases at 34%.
