Stacey Park Milbern, a fierce disability justice activist, is the 19th woman honored as part of the American Women quarters program that highlights notable women in U.S. history. Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, Milbern (among other accomplishments) created the Disability Justice Club, advised the Obama administration and helped produce the Netflix documentary Crip Camp. She died in 2020 on her 33rd birthday. Her commemorative quarter depicts her in a wheelchair above the words “Disability Justice.” Stacey loved and cared for people fiercely and unreservedly,” the Disability Visibility Project noted at the time of her death. “Her ideas were truly revolutionary and focused on the future.” The American Women quarters program began three years ago and ends in 2025. Past honorees include Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride and Eleanor Roosevelt.
