Costco has decided not to sell the abortion pill mifepristone at its more than 500 pharmacy locations. Bloomberg reports that investors had warned both Costco and Walmart against selling the pill because of vehement opposition from religious groups. Walmart doesn’t currently stock the drug. Letters from more than three dozen investment advisers and fiduciaries argued that stocking the pill would be “legally and politically fraught” and would drive away customers. Other groups, however, urged Costco and other large retailers to stock mifespristone, calling it a “safe, FDA-approved medication.” The drug, which was approved by the FDA in 2000, accounted for 63% of U.S. abortions in 2023.
