Tokyo is encouraging male government workers to swap suits for shorts this summer, but women are calling the “Tokyo Cool Biz” initiative a double standard and “leg hair harassment,” noting that they’re still expected to wear formal office attire. The BBC reports that several women have used the term “sunehara,” or “the discomfort of being forced to see their colleague’s leg hair.” The BBC notes that the backlash has even reportedly fueled a boom in men’s laser hair removal. Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike introduced the initiative last April as part of a national energy saving campaign.
