Black Women’s Equal Pay Day highlights persistent wage gap

Yesterday, July 21, was Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, with Equal Pay Today noting that “Black women experience one of the largest and most persistent wage gaps in the country due to both racial and gender discrimination.” Full-time, year-round workers earn just 65 cents for every dollar earned by white men. That drops to 63 cents when including part-time or seasonal workers. Equal Pay Today notes that, “if the wage gap were eliminated, a typical Black woman working in the United States would have enough money to pay for approximately 30 months of food, 23 months of childcare or 12 months of mortgage payments.”
