The Environmental Protection Agency says it will stop testing chemicals on animals by 2035. Yesterday’s announcement revives the EPA’s original commitment, made during the first Trump term, to end testing on mammals including rats, mice and rabbits by 2035 with an interim goal of ending it by 2025. That timeline was abandoned under the Biden administration. Experts say rapid advancements in AI technology make it easier than ever to determine a chemical’s toxicity without testing it on a living creature. EPA officials said “high quality alternative scientific methods” were used by the agency for the first time last year during cancer evaluations involving chemicals found in paints, adhesives and cosmetics. An estimated 1,600 rodents were spared from experiments as a result.
