A woman known as Maine’s “Lobster Lady” has died at the age of 105. Virginia “Ginny” Oliver began working with her father and brother at age 8, according to her obituary, at a time when few women worked in the lobster industry. “Over more than nine decades, she hauled lobster traps off the Maine coast,” it notes. “Well into her centenarian years, she continued renewing her Maine commercial lobster fishing license and remained connected to the boats and crews she loved.” She was profiled in documentaries and was even the subject of children’s books, including The Lobster Lady: Maine’s 102-Year-Old Legend. A public celebration of her life will take place on June 8, two days after what would have been her 106th birthday.
