News media isn’t the only industry with more female representation online than in traditional forms. The share of women-made shows is rising on streaming services, but not on traditional broadcast networks, a new study shows. Between August 2024 and June 2025, 36% of streaming shows were made by women, up from 27% the previous year. On broadcast TV, women accounted for 20% of creators — a figure that didn’t change during the same period. The trend plays out across many behind-the-scenes roles: women make up 32% of directors on streaming shows (18% on broadcast), 34% of writers (27% broadcast), 33% of editors (17% broadcast) and 10% of directors of photography (3% broadcast). Shows with at least one woman creator employ many more women across the board than shows made exclusively by men, the study adds.
