The Boston Hunters, New York Heights, Los Angeles Queens and San Francisco Firebells are the four teams launching the inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. “These identities stand on the shoulders of giants,” the league says, “with each team name inspired by a visionary woman who blazed her own trail and paved the way for those who followed.” The Hunters, for example, are inspired by Harriot Hunt, a 19th-century physician and advocate for women’s rights, while the Heights are named after civil and women’s rights activist Dorothy Height. The league launches on Aug. 1 and runs for six weeks before playoffs begin. The league is the first women’s baseball league in the U.S. in more than 70 years.
