Australian officials offered asylum to the entire Iran women’s soccer team this week after they were in the country for the Asian Cup tournament. Seven of the women accepted the offer while the remainder of the team flew back to Iran, which is engulfed in a war with the U.S. and Israel. During the team’s first game, the women all remained silent, refusing to sing their national anthem, a move that some believed was an act of protest, while others called it mourning. There has been international concern that when the women return to Iran, they could be punished for their action, though Iranian officials have guaranteed their security upon their return.
