Professional tennis player Adolfo Daniel Vallego has been fined $65,000 for criticizing a female umpire at the French Open. The Associated Press reports that Vallego, from Paraguay, lost a five-set match and then said, “this sort of match needs to be umpired by a man,” and “it’s very difficult for a woman to do it.” In an official statement, the French Tennis Federation and Roland-Garros tournament organizers pushed back, saying, “the competence of an umpire is not determined by their gender…The Roland-Garros tournament strongly condemns all sexist remarks, regardless of who makes them.”
