Planning a trip before summer ends? Travel is down across the U.S. as cautious consumers dial back their plans. Using cell phone data, Placer.ai says economic uncertainty and rising prices are putting the brake on travel plans. Foot traffic is down at both airports and gas stations, and miles traveled in two-thirds of the 25 largest markets in the U.S. is off significantly from 2024 levels. People instead are opting for shorter, regional “micro-cations” instead of long-distance trips, leading to less driving and flying. The shift “signals a significant recalibration of household budgets that will likely shape the broader retail and travel landscape for the rest of the year.”
